The fight against large-scale cultivation of illicit substances has incorporated a new and significant operation in southern Europe. This time, the Guardia di Finanza of Italy has dealt a million-euro blow to networks dedicated to drug production operating in the Calabria region, dismantling an extensive network of plantations concealed in hard-to-access natural areas.
The police intervention, carried out in the province of Catanzaro, is part of an intense campaign aimed at eradicating local production and curbing drug trafficking in the national territory. Unlike the indoor plantations that were recently dismantled in the province of Guadalajara, this time the drug traffickers decided to take advantage of the density of the Calabrian forests to camouflage their operations in broad daylight.
During the operation, agents of the Guardia di Finanza entered forested areas, where they located 'forests' of cannabis. The operation culminated in the identification and destruction of 19 extensive plantations.
The plants, of considerable size and robustness, were in an advanced state of flowering, ready for imminent harvesting and subsequent distribution in the illegal market. The selected area, Calabria, is under the control of the 'Ndrangheta, as indicated by judicial sources in a recent report on the situation on the ground.
The volume of the seizure is so significant that Italian authorities have estimated the value of the confiscated drugs at over 8.3 million euros, representing a severe blow to the finances of the criminal organizations responsible for these clandestine crops.
This operation by the Guardia di Finanza in Calabria highlights the magnitude of the challenge posed by large-scale marijuana production in southern Italy.
