A significant shipment of cocaine arrived in Valencia on the ferry from Ibiza.

Cocaine had already arrived on land. The ferry coming from Ibiza had recently docked in Valencia, and the vehicles were beginning to exit the ship when Customs Surveillance agents noticed something unusual. An image captured by the 'Medusa' scanner, which is a van equipped with X-ray technology, focused attention on one of the cars. Inside, there was a notable shipment: 1,420 kilograms of cocaine. This represents the second major seizure that has been intercepted at the Levantine port in a short period of time.

It was a shipment of considerable volume, intended to cross the port and continue its journey across the peninsula. The vehicle had arrived from Ibiza, an island that in recent years has attracted the interest of organizations dedicated to international drug trafficking. However, this route is completely unusual. It is true that vessels have been observed unloading significant shipments in the Balearics, but until now, large-scale transits from there to the Peninsula had not been recorded.

The agents selected the car during the checks established for passengers and vehicles disembarking from the ferries. The scanner indicated a load arrangement that raised suspicions among the officials. The physical inspection confirmed what the machine had indicated, finding strange bundles in the back of the truck.

The amount confiscated makes this intervention one of the most significant blows against drug trafficking detected in the maritime connections between the Balearic Islands and Valencia. Possibly, the most relevant.

The operation, called Reventón, was carried out by the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency. This procedure highlights, once again, the importance of controls on ferries. Thousands of vehicles cross daily between the islands and the peninsula, a flow that criminal organizations may attempt to exploit to introduce large quantities of drugs into peninsular territory.

The driver, of Romanian nationality, was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health. Both the vehicle and the narcotic substances were placed under the custody of the investigators, while the proceedings were made available to the judicial authority. At this moment, the investigation will need to broaden its focus beyond the driver.
